The largest publishing house of educational literature in Russia announced the successful launch of the Odyssey WMS solution in a seasonal warehouse. The implementation was the first step towards the integrated automation of logistics management.
The peak period for the delivery of products to the regions falls on the summer months - from May to September. Before the start of the high season, it became clear that the current model of the logistics processes and the warehouse complex would be heavily overloaded, taking into account the planned volumes of orders. However, a sudden change in the IT system could exacerbate the situation. Moreover, the processes of warehouse and transport logistics, until recently, were entirely supported by a third-party partner of the Publishing House. The company decided to open an additional seasonal warehouse, to simultaneously remove the issue of increased load during the peak season and implement the new Odyssey WMS management system. The aim of the project was to put the seasonal warehouse into operation by the beginning of the peak season. Among the requirements for choosing a project partner, the Prosveshcheniya management took into account the flexibility of the basic settings of the warehouse solution in order to quickly launch and finalize the WMS for the specifics of the Publishing House processes. Consulting company Odyssey was recognized as the best in all characteristics.
“The Odyssey team offered us a solution with wide functionality, adapted to standard processes, which made it possible to reduce the time for launching a warehouse. The project partner has passed a rigorous selection process. In addition to the budget and timing of implementation, the presence of a qualified team with relevant experience was assessed, the presence of positive feedback from other Russian clients and the possibility of a visit to the warehouse of one of the customers,” comments Denis Stasevich, project manager, Prosveshchenie publishing house.
“Despite The Odyssey WMS solution is quite easy to master even for an inexperienced warehouse worker. If warehouse technologies change over time, the system can be easily reconfigured according to new needs. Thus, Enlightenment Publishing will be able to constantly improve the level of logistics services and serve more customers,” comments Vladimir Puchenkov, director of the Warehouse Management practice, consulting company Odyssey.
The leadership of the Prosveshcheniye Publishing House has planned a large-scale reorganization of the main distribution warehouse. It is the starting point from which over 7,000 Enlightenment products—textbooks, workbooks, teacher guides, and other materials—are sent to educational institutions and commercial customers, and ultimately to students and teachers. Thus, the quality of work of the Prosveshcheniya warehouse complex affects the provision of Russian schools with the necessary educational literature. , inventory. In accordance with the processes, the warehouse zones and the roles of employees were designated. Setting up the system we also redefined inventory units, their required parameters, placement and processing features,” comments Andrey Zakharov, project coordinator at Prosveshchenie Publishing House. than in a month. The seasonal warehouse was organized from scratch: within the specified period, the main processes were designed and automated, and a non-standard procedure for integrating with the 1C system for the existing exchange format was prepared. Prosveshcheniya and Odyssey specialists built the process model and WMS operation in such a way as to ensure the maximum speed of order picking during the peak season. In a new warehouse with an area of ??8000 sq. meters floor storage is used, the system helps to process up to 550,000 copies (25,000 packs) of products daily.
At the same time, warehouse employees were trained to work with the system and data collection terminals (TSD). With the participation of Odyssey, the company developed detailed methodological instructions for different user groups, primarily for operators. Thanks to training materials and a mentoring system, employees of the seasonal warehouse mastered Odyssey WMS in a short time. New employees of the complex will also be able to quickly start functional tasks.
Odyssey consultants have shown high competence and a flexible approach to implementation even under tight deadlines. All tasks, including requests to improve the system for working with TSD, were carried out extremely quickly. The partner team helped train staff and provided effective technical support, worked in an automated warehouse side by side with employees,” comments Andrey Krivosheev, system architect at Prosveshcheniye Publishing House. A number of methodologies for the central warehouse are still being developed. The final results of warehouse automation will be summed up by Prosveshchenie publishing house after the end of the season.
Based on the implementation results, the warehouse was audited by experts in the field of logistics, among whom were representatives of the German company Sigloch, the leading German logistics company in the field of bookselling. Representatives of the company highly appreciated the processes and automation system of the Prosveshcheniye Publishing House. " We were very impressed with the speed of implementation of the software component and the complex but stable technical processes,” comments Christoph Schaupp, Managing Partner of the Sigloch Group.
“We gained invaluable experience in the implementation of warehouse tasks in "combat" conditions. The successful implementation of Odyssey WMS in a seasonal warehouse in a short period of time only confirmed our determination to reorganize the logistics management system. The next step is the transfer of Odyssey WMS to the main warehouse of the Publishing House,” comments Alla Mishakova, project curator, vice president of the Enlightenment Publishing House.
